The Golden Chicken

So we now carry Certified Organic Chicken Feed!! Grow, Scratch, Layer and Finsher, Feeding your chickens with an organic nutritionally balanced Feed is crucial for healthy Eggs, Meat and a quality Manure. We also carry Bags of Organic Chicken Manure for those not blessed with a fresh supply, which to me is the greatest resource the chicken produces,  a stinky bag of chicken manure with a little bit of trace minerals is a potent and cheap way to feed your tropical garden, my papayas go nuts when I top dress with a little manure monthly, you need to be careful though the manure is so potent(be warned most chicken poo in bags stinks) that you do not want it to physically touch your plants because it could damage them, especially soft stemmed plants, One way to tone down the potency and smell is to mix the chicken poo with compost and wood chips then cover and let it sit for a couple months, I call this Chicken Gold and the more you can have around the better. I could write a book about chickens and there many benfits, from free ranging to insect conrol for orchards but take my word Chickens are a crucial part of our sustainable future and we highly reccomend them as a componet of your Tropical Garden...

Bokashi Papayas

So I'm really excited to have learned a new technique to grow choke(lots) papayas, it all starts with kitchen compost and a locally made product we sell called Bokashi(thanks jon), which is wheatgerm that has been fermented with EM or effective microorganisms although it can be made by inoculating any organic matter with a variety of hosts of beneficial bacteria/ microbes. The Bokashi is proven to help speed up composting and neutralize odors. So to grow choke papayas you need a air tight 5 gallon buckets, a pound of Bokashi per bucket, and kitchen scrapes(all scrapes even cooked meat and diary). You start off by throwing a handful of Bokashi in the bottom of our bucket followed by a pile of you kitchen waste them more Bokashi and more kitchen waste as you accumulate it. Eventually your bucket is full to the brim(stuffed with no air space) with your kitchen waste and Bokashi mix, I top it off with some more Bokashi and put the lid on it, immediately I start another fresh bucket inside to get this cycle perpetual, then take your original full bucket outside and place it in the shade for two weeks,  after two weeks the mix has been fermented and you can open the lid, pour out any liquid into your regular compost pile or use it as a plant food but first dilute it 1:100 parts water as it is very acidic. Then dig a big hole  moving at least about 10 gallon of soil out, dump you bucket of Bokashi waste into the hole, mix in a few gallons of soil and then cover it with a few inches of the soil, let that hole settle for two more weeks then you are ready to plant a non-gmo papaya keiki(baby) into that hole. Depending on you papaya strain you should have choke(lots) of papayas in about six months to a year, I just keep digging more holes and planting more papayas as my scrapes build up, you should have more papayas then you know what to do with using this method and it the fastest way to use you kitchen scrapes!!! Im going to try all kinds kinds of planting using this method and will keep you updated!!

Aloha Acai

I'm sure you have heard of Acai (ah-sah-EE ) by now, but did you know it is the palm berry of the clumping palm species Euterpe oleracea? We at Eco-Islands know the value in exotic tropical palms, especially ones that have so many uses.. Native to South America, Acai is cultivated for its fruit, heart of palm, an oil source(seeds) and building a material source(trunks that are bug resistant), Acai palm seems a perfect fit for our sustainable future. The fruit consist of a hefty rack of grape sized berries, the berries are mostly seed(80%) but if you can pulp that berry you are left with a purple nutrient rich smoothie that is well worth the time it took to grow and process!! Popular in Brazil as the milk for their cereal you will often find it served in a bowl with granola, bananas and local honey of course. We love our Acai Bowls so much that we found a Acai Expert that works with Acai Farmers in Brazil, He sent us over some very clean and Disease Free seed of a variety know as Para Dwarf, not a True Acai but one that only grows up to 30ft as compared to a 100ft for some Acai palms found in the Rain forest. The Palms are about  year old and we have decided to spread the love a little, so we are selling 50 of these palms on a first come first serve basis at $15 a piece. Call us to see if we still have them in stock, we have many more seeds planted for the future but they are no quite ready yet.

Happy Planting!
